3 Simple Steps to Test the Quality of 52% Chlorinated Paraffin
Chlorinated Paraffin is one of the most widely used chemical additives in various industries, including the production of cables, PVC, rubber, paints, and industrial coatings. The 52% grade of this substance is highly popular due to providing an excellent balance between flexibility and flame resistance. But how can we ensure the quality of the purchased product?
In this article, Maad Chlor Azarabadegan Company, backed by over 16 years of experience in producing chemicals, teaches you 3 simple and practical steps to test the quality of 52% chlorinated paraffin.
Why is Testing the Quality of Chlorinated Paraffin Important?
Using low-quality chlorinated paraffin can lead to a reduced lifespan of end products (such as cable brittleness or a drop in paint quality), undesirable color changes when exposed to heat, and a decrease in flame-retardant properties. Conducting initial tests helps you ensure the purity and efficiency of the product.
3 Simple Steps to Test the Quality of 52% Chlorinated Paraffin
To check the quality of this substance, highly complex equipment is not required. With these 3 steps in a laboratory environment, you can have an accurate and initial assessment:
Step 1: Visual and Color Inspection (Visual Inspection)
The first and simplest way to determine quality is to look at the product’s appearance.
- Color: High-quality 52% chlorinated paraffin should be a clear liquid, free of impurities, and very light yellow (almost colorless). Being cloudy or having a dark yellow or brown color indicates the presence of impurities, an incorrect production process, or the decomposition of the substance.
- Transparency: The product should not have suspended particles or be biphasic (separated into two phases).
Step 2: Viscosity and Thickness Check (Viscosity Check)
52% chlorinated paraffin has a specific viscosity (thickness) at room temperature.
- How to test: Pour some of the substance into a glass beaker and stir it or pour it out.
- Desired result: This grade should have an oily state and a relatively high viscosity. If the substance is too runny (like water) or too stiff and paste-like, its chlorine percentage is likely not 52%, or it has been mixed with other solvents.
Step 3: Thermal Stability Test
This is the most important test for chlorinated paraffin, as this substance is subjected to heat in industrial processes (such as PVC extrusion).
- How to test: Pour some of the sample into a test tube and heat it in an oil bath or oven at a standard temperature (usually around 170 to 180°C) for a specific period.
- Desired result: High-quality chlorinated paraffin should show good resistance to heat, and its color should not turn black or dark quickly. Also, a strong and pungent odor of hydrochloric acid (HCl) gas should not be emitted rapidly. The quick release of gas and severe color change indicate low thermal stability and poor quality.
Note: This test must strictly be performed under a laboratory fume hood and in compliance with safety principles.
